So, let's dive right in and discover how you got to be where you are, and what kind of mindset you possess!

I sometimes learn multiple lessons from a single story. I’m not sure if I’ve told the following story before.

As a child I remember that one of the things my mother had hoped to do was to write a book and have it published. She had an unfinished manuscript I can recall. As a child I made an attempt to write a book also.

Somewhere between 1992 and 1996, while attending a church in Brighton, NY there was a pastor who had just wrote a book that the church had adopted as part of its new member class (catechism). It was my belief that I heard from God that He would write a book through me. With excitement, I made an appointment to meet with the author of the book at the church to get some pointers and hoping to be encouraged.

I arrived for my meeting with the pastor to share my excitement with him. After greeting me, we went to his office and he asked me the purpose of our meeting. After sharing with him that God said He was going to write a book through me, replied “God didn’t tell that. He’s not going to write a book through you.”

I was devastated and lost for words. I have no idea of what else he may of said. Meanwhile, I felt angry, and I imagined myself flipping his desk over and stormily walking away. However, I did nothing, I sat still doing nothing and saying nothing like a statue. I gathered my thoughts while maintaining my composure.
The next thing I remember is his asking me if there was anything I wanted to discuss. I replied that I had nothing else to discuss, thanked him for his time and calmly walked away.

I had mixed emotions about him as one of the leaders at the church; about how leaders are supposed to supportive and encouraging; about my relationship with God; about my wife at the time being unsupportive by her cosigning what the pastor said to me; about my identity; and so on.

The comments of the pastor were like a demolition crew to every area of my entire life – including my sanity.

Understanding the Origins:

To examine how you arrived at your current situation, it is crucial to explore the forces that have shaped your mindset along the way. Our mindset is influenced by numerous factors such as our upbringing, environment, experiences, and the people we surround ourselves with. These elements shape our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, ultimately guiding our actions and determining our outcomes.

Whether you see challenges as opportunities for growth or as obstacles blocking your path heavily depends on the type of mindset you possess.

Identifying Your Mindset:

Now that we have set the groundwork, it's time for some introspection. Take a moment to identify the predominant mindset you possess. Do you find yourself often plagued by self-doubt and negativity, or do you possess a more optimistic and growth-oriented mindset? It is essential to be honest and self-aware during this process.

The Fixed Mindset:

If you tend to have a fixed mindset, you may believe that certain abilities, talents, or intelligence are fixed traits that cannot be changed. Consequently, you may feel discouraged by setbacks, fear failure, and avoid challenges. If you frequently find yourself avoiding challenges, being deterred by failures, or feeling threatened by the success of others, you may be stuck in a fixed mindset. This mindset type limits personal growth and hinders resilience.

The Growth Mindset:

In contrast, a growth mindset believes that abilities and talents can be cultivated and developed through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Individuals with a growth mindset embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and view failures as opportunities for growth. This mindset empowers personal development and fosters a sense of resilience.

Nurturing a Growth Mindset:

Now that we have established the significance of a growth mindset, you might be wondering how to cultivate and nurture it in your own life. Here are a few strategies that can help you:

  1. Self-awareness: Reflect on your current mindset and identify any fixed beliefs or limiting thoughts. Acknowledge them, and hold yourself accountable for challenging and replacing these beliefs with growth-oriented ones. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and tackle new experiences. Embrace each opportunity as a chance to learn and grow.

  2. Continuous learning: Embrace a lifelong commitment to learning and developing new skills. Seek out opportunities for personal and professional growth, whether it be through workshops, online courses, or reading books that challenge your thinking. Cultivate a sense of optimism and focus on the possibilities rather than dwelling on limitations. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations to shift your mindset.

  3. Embrace challenges: Welcome challenges as stepping stones for growth. Embrace failure as a valuable teacher, enabling you to gain insights and refine your approach. Instead of ruminating on past failures, use them as stepping stones toward a better future. Rather than avoiding them, immerse yourself in situations that push you out of your comfort zone. Embrace failure as a necessary part of the learning process, allowing you to gain valuable insights and refine your approach.

  4. Positive self-talk: Be mindful of the language you use to speak to yourself. Replace self-limiting beliefs with empowering statements. Remind yourself that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth, and that you are more than capable of overcoming them. Surround yourself with individuals who support and encourage your growth. Seek out mentors, role models, or communities to learn from their experiences.

Your mindset plays a pivotal role in determining your personal growth and success. By understanding and nurturing your natural inclination, you can pave the way for transforming obstacles into opportunities. By embracing a growth mindset, adapting the strategies mentioned above, and focusing on continuous improvement, you can take charge of your journey towards mindset mastery and overcome any challenges that come your way. Remember, it's never too late to embark on this empowering transformational journey!

    Recommendation:

We recommend exploring books, resources, and workshops dedicated to this topic. Engaging in mindset-related exercises and seeking guidance from experts can provide comprehensive and structured approaches to help you navigate your path towards a growth-oriented mindset.

Consistency and perseverance are key to achieving lasting results.

In 1998, I wrote and published my first book “The Body of Christ” through Author House. As of August 2023, I have written and published a total of 9 books; and am still writing. I have fulfilled my mother’s dream and am certain of my relationship with God.
